Fatty acids are primarily composed of a hydrocarbon chain (a long chain of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen atoms) with a terminal carboxyl group (-COOH) at one end. The carboxyl group is responsible for the acidic properties of fatty acids.

Saturated fatty acids are distinguished from unsaturated ones by the absence of double bonds between carbon atoms. This results in straight hydrocarbon chains, allowing them to pack tightly together. In contrast, unsaturated fatty acids contain one or more double bonds, which create kinks in the chain, preventing tight packing and often resulting in a liquid form at room temperature.

The primary function of triglycerides is energy storage. They store more energy per gram than carbohydrates or proteins and are the body's main form of long-term energy reserve. Triglycerides are stored in adipose tissue and can be broken down into fatty acids and glycerol when the body needs energy.

The structure of phospholipids consists of a glycerol backbone attached to two fatty acid tails and a phosphate group. The fatty acid tails are hydrophobic (water-repelling), while the phosphate group is hydrophilic (water-attracting). This dual nature allows phospholipids to form the lipid bilayer structure of cell membranes, where the hydrophilic heads face outward toward the water, and the hydrophobic tails face inward, away from water.

Cholesterol plays a crucial role in maintaining the fluidity and stability of cell membranes. It helps to prevent the membrane from becoming too rigid at low temperatures and too fluid at high temperatures, ensuring the membrane remains flexible and functional. Cholesterol also contributes to the formation of lipid rafts, which are specialized regions of the membrane involved in cell signaling and protein trafficking.

Cholesterol is the precursor for steroid hormones. It is converted into various steroid hormones, such as cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, through enzymatic processes. Cholesterol's role as a precursor is essential for the production of these hormones, which are involved in regulating various physiological processes like metabolism, immune function, and reproductive health.

Lipids store more energy per gram than carbohydrates, providing 9 kcal/g, compared to carbohydrates, which provide about 4 kcal/g. This higher energy density makes lipids an efficient form of long-term energy storage in the body. While carbohydrates are used for quick energy, lipids are typically stored for longer-term energy needs.

A key function of fatty acids is to serve as building blocks for other lipids, such as triglycerides and phospholipids. Fatty acids are also important in providing energy and play a role in various biological processes, including cell membrane structure and signaling. Their versatility makes them essential components in both energy storage and cellular function.

The amphipathic nature of phospholipids refers to the presence of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions within the same molecule. The hydrophilic (water-attracting) head, which contains the phosphate group, faces outward toward the aqueous environment, while the hydrophobic (water-repelling) fatty acid tails face inward, away from water. This unique structure allows phospholipids to form the lipid bilayer of cell membranes, creating a semi-permeable barrier that is crucial for cellular function.

One function of steroid hormones is to regulate various biological processes, including growth, metabolism, immune response, and reproductive functions. For example, hormones like estrogen and testosterone play key roles in the development of sexual characteristics, while cortisol helps regulate stress and inflammation. These hormones work by binding to specific receptors in target cells, triggering changes in gene expression and cellular activity.
