Feedback

Arthritis is a debilitating inflammatory process in the joints; treatment is focused on decreasing inflammation and damaging effects of the immune system.

Short term use of corticosteroids can be used to control severe symptoms associated with RA.

Corticosteroids may be used to treat the inflammation associated with RA but should be used with caution due to adverse effects associate with long term use. Side effects include increased blood glucose, hypertension, increased appetite, osteoporosis (long-term), mental health, insomnia, cataracts (long-term) and more.

Folic acid should be taken with methotrexate to decrease the side effects of methotrexate.

Gout flares are characterized by severe pain, tenderness, swelling, redness and heat in a joint.

Gout flares are caused by a build up of uric acid in the joint. Allopurinol is used to decrease the uric acid in the body and can help to prevent flares and treat those that are occurring.

Foods high in purine include organ meats, sardines/anchovies, alcohol and sweet drinks

Naproxen or Ibuprofen are anti-inflammatory medications that are recommended for a gout flare. Aspirin is not recommended; it can worsen a flare. Tylenol and morphine are not anti-inflammatory and may decrease the pain but would not be the best choice for pain management.
