They join an independent clause to a dependent clause being compared or contrasted. Examples of subordinators include while, whereas, just as, as, and in the same way that. These words introduce dependent clauses, which are not complete thoughts. The independent clause usually describes the point that is being emphasized or is more important. 4 Punctuation Put a comma after a dependent clause that introduces a sentence. Example: Whereas Eriksen’s proposal deals with stopping garbage from entering the ocean, Boyan Slat proposes cleaning up the garbage already in the ocean. Do not use a comma when the dependent clause follows the independent clause. Comparisons and Contrasts

Subordinators

Subordinators are words that are used to compare or contrast the ideas in two clauses. They join an independent clause to a dependent clause being compared or contrasted. Examples of subordinators include while, whereas, just as, as, and in the same way that. These words introduce dependent clauses, which are not complete thoughts. The independent clause usually describes the point that is being emphasized or is more important.

Punctuation

Put a comma after a dependent clause that introduces a sentence.

Example: Whereas Eriksen’s proposal deals with stopping garbage from entering the ocean, Boyan Slat proposes cleaning up the garbage already in the ocean.
