Disposing of waste plasticsVersión en línea Ways of disposing of waste plastics por Rita Bandirali 1 Burying waste plastic 2 Burning waste plastic 3 Recycling It means taking waste to a landfill site, compacting it , and then covering it with soil. It is used when the plastic is difficult to separate from other waste. it is used when the plastic is not in sufficient quantities to make separation financially worthwhiile. It is used when the plastic is too difficult technically to recycle. Because the amount of waste is becoming more and more of a problem, there's a need to reduce landfill as much as possible. If recycling isn't possible for whatever reason, waste plastics can be burned . The heat can be used to generate electricity. This process needs to be carefully controlled to reduce toxic gases. Polymers that contain chlorine (such as PVC) produce HCl when they're burned- this has to be removed. waste gases from the combustion are passed through scrubbers which can neutralise gases such as HCl by allowing them to react with a base. Because many plastics are made from non-renewable oil fractions, it makes sense to recycle plastics as much as possible. There's more than one way to do so. After sorting into different types some plastics -poly(propene) for example- can be melted and remoulded. Some plastics can be cracked into monomers which can be used to make more plastics or other chemicals. Plastic products are usually marked to make sorting easier .
