When starting a Lewis structure , 1 electron is placed on each of the element symbol . Only when more than electrons need to be shown will there be pairs of electrons on a side of the element symbol .

Each single bond ( one line ) contains electrons .

In the compound CCl4 , carbon can make four bonds because it has four . Each chlorine will make bond with the carbon in order to satisfy its .

In the compounds NH3 , there is one because the nitrogen atom starts with valence electrons and only of them are in bonds . Hydrogen is satisfied with only 1 bond to nitrogen because it only needs 2 to have a filled valence shell .

In N2 , the nitrogens will be attached by a bond ; this satisfies their octet because they started with 5 valence electrons and gained another 3 in the bonds .

When a compound has an overall negative charge it indicates that there are electrons in the Lewis structure than the valence electrons the atoms started with .

In the water molecule ( H2O ) there are 2 lone pairs on the atom .

and commonly exceed an octet , meaning they can have more than electrons .

In O2 , the oxygens will be attached by a bond ; this satisfies their octet because they started with 6 valence electrons and gained another 2 in the bonds .
