The main tissue in the ovule / is called nucellus . A single diploid ( 2n ) cell in nucellus is called megasporocyte or spore mother cell . The diploid ( 2n ) megasporocyte undergoes meiosis to produce four ( n ) megaspores . of these four haploid ( n ) megaspores degenerate , leaving only survivor . The surviving megaspore undergoes mitotic divisions , producing haploid nuclei . The entire ovule now has become the sac .
Within the sac , the eight nuclei arrange themselves in a manner whereby ;
i ) nuclei will stay near the micropyle ( this side of the sac is called the chalaza end ) , from which the one in the middle becomes the , whilst the two sandwiching the egg are called the . The hapoloid ( n ) will be fertilised by a haploid ( n ) gamete to form a diploid ( 2n ) .
ii ) Two nuclei remain in the of the sac . These nuclei will be fertilised by the other haploid ( n ) male gamete to form a large triploid ( ) .
iii ) The remaining three nuclei position themselves opposite to the chalaza end , and will be known as the cells .
