Ancient Egypt was one of the greatest civilizations in history . It for nearly 3 , 000 years , and its impact can still be found today . The art , culture , and history of Egypt continue to fascinate scholars . One Egyptian in particular has captured the minds and of historians and thousands of others , Her name was Cleopatra , and her story , although thousands of years old , continue to captivate around the world .

Cleopatra , daughter of pharaoh Ptolemy XII , was born in 69 BCE , Fron a young age , Cleopatra was exceptionally smart . She spoke at least nine languages and studied philosophy , , and astronomy . She was also a great public speaker . Her father favored her , and when she was just 14 , he her co - ruler of Egypt . This was quite a responsibility .

When she was 18 years old , the pharaoh died . This meant she was now the ruler of Egypt . Her four years of experience prepared her for this role . But she had to share the throne with her
10 - year - . old brother , Ptolemy XIII . They had to marry in order to officially rule the together . Egyptian custom said that , as a woman , Cleopatra should step back and allow her younger brother to take the lead . However , she knew she could lead on her own .

The Romans soon teamed up with Ptolemy XIII to steal the throne . But Cleopatra was a fighter . She built her own and fought her brother . Julius Caesar was helping Ptolemy XIIi . She believed if she could speak to Caesar directly , he would help her . But she also knew her brother would not let her meet him . She was clever . She rolled herself in a and had herself delivered to Caesar´s room . The trick worked ! Caesar was impressed . Not only did he help her defeat her , he fell in love with her . They soon dad a child together . Cleopatra was in Rome when Caesar was killed .

After Caesar died , Cleopatra fell in love wint a Roman general . His name was Mark Antony . They did everything together and were political allies . They together against the enemies of Egypt . Soon , the ruler of Rome , Octavian , declared war on Egypt . During the battle , Cleopatra led a dozen of her own naval . But Rome was too powerful . They soon defeated the Egypcians .

Cleopatra knew she would be taken prisoner . Instead of suffering this fate , she took her own life . It is said she allowed a poisonous cobra to bite her . Her tomb has never been found . It is rumored that Cleopatra and Mark Antony are buried in a secret place to they could be together for . Archaeologists continue to search for the lovers´final resting place .

During her rule , Cleopatra grew the Egyptian economy . She built new trade partnerships . She was a ruler and embraced Egyptian culture and independence . Cleopatra is often remembered for her beauty , but her mind was much more powerful . She was a bold leader with many strengths and talents . Her contributions to Egypt have earned her a special place in history . Her legagy still stands as tall as the . There is no doubt her name will be spoken for many years to come .
