SHAKESPEARE'S OTHELLO is a timeless about race ( competizione ) , love , jealousy and betrayal ( tradimento ) racism . But where Shakespeare get the idea for story and its background ? The basic background to the plot is thought to have come from Geraldi Cinthio's book , Hundred Stories .
The story of William Shakespeare's Othello is set ( ambientata ) in 16th - Venice and Cyprus . Othello the Moor , a noble warrior in the Venetian army , has secretly married a beautiful white called Desdemona , the daughter of a prominent ( importante ) senator , Brabantio . When Brabantio finds out , he is outraged , and promptly disowns ( rinnega ) her .
Othello's ensign ( alfiere ) , Iago , harbours ( custodisce ) a secret and resentment towards the Moor , partly because another soldier , lieutenant Cassio , has been promoted ahead of ( davanti ) him , and also he suspects that Othello has had an affair with his wife Emilia . Intent on revenge , Iago hatches ( macchina ) a devious ( tortuoso ) plan plant suspicions in Othello's that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio . He orchestrates a street fight , for which Cassio is wrongly blamed , and is then dismissed from his post by Othello . Desdemona takes up ( appoggia ) Cassio's case with her , which only inflames his suspicions that the pair are .
In the meantime , Iago manages to procure a ( affezionato ) handkerchief from Desdemona that was given to her by Othello . He plants it on Cassio so that Othello sees it , then concludes it is proof of their affair . Maddened by , he orders Iago to Cassio , and then he Desdemona . Immediately afterwards ? . her innocence is revealed and Iago's treachery exposed . In a fit of grief ( in un impeto di dolore ) and remorse Othello kills . Iago is into custody by the Venetian authorities .
