Big studios , like MGM and , made the firms and they also owned the cinemas , so they became very rich . Today , some of these big studios still dominate the American film industry . They now produce - big , expensive films with famous actors and excellent special effects . Some examples of famous blockbusters include Avatar , and the Harry Potter films . These films are usually very expensive to make , but they make a lot of money for the studios , too .
