Virtual team building activities

In today's world of technology , the virtual team is believed to be the future of work and seems more than ever . It's a global phenomenon that seems to be here to stay . Both companies and employees enjoy their own advantages of either managing or being part of a virtual team . Companies of all sizes report significant decreases in operating costs . According to Forbes , companies report savings ranging from 10 to more than 70 million dollars thanks to its remote work options . When it comes to employees , a global survey by PGI showed that 79 percent of qualified knowledge workers already worked from home , and 60 percent who worked remotely part - time would be ready to telecommute full - time .

However , those already in remote work can often feel very lonely . As they rarely interact with their peers and managers , relationships in a virtual team can become very dry . Members of virtual teams lose what's called the 'water cooler effect' , meaning they don't just each other at the water cooler and talk about things unrelated to work . Such minor chats can be trivial , but their impact on team performance is significant . Team and satisfaction levels increase when team members know and like each other . What can be done , then , to bring remote team members closer ? According to Hassan Osman , PMO Manager at Cisco Systems and the author of the book Influencing virtual teams , building trust , increasing level of intimacy , and learning more about your team members on a personal and professional level are essential . He suggests the following two team - building activities that can build trust and among your team .

1 . The objective of this first activity is to increase the level of intimacy among your virtual team members . To achieve that , it's mandatory that all participants use video and get the chance to talk . A number of remote team members may using video , but it's the key element to build intimacy . Explain this to your team ahead of time so that they come prepared and have the opportunity to look good ? maybe they usually work in their PJs and would prefer to spruce up before the call . To change that , ask team members to share two pictures unrelated to work . Family , kids , pets , hobbies , home office , vacation , a gadget one wants to buy ? anything that a person would be comfortable to make public . Each participant gets five minutes to talk about the pictures and then other team members are free to learn more . Encourage them to ask additional questions .
