Balaton
is
a
natural
outdoor
playground
located
in
Hungary
,
offering
water
sports
and
bathing
in
the
summer
months
,
and
one
of
the
world's
largest
ice
skating
rinks
in
the
winter
.

I
recall
the
first
time
my
eyes
spied
the
Balaton
.
I
can
picture
it
as
if
it
were
just
yesterday
,
but
almost
ten
years
have
passed
since
that
warm
morning
in
the
month
of
May
.
We
had
just
moved
our
small
family
to
Hungary
and
were
exploring
our
new
surroundings
,
pausing
here
and
there
to
get
a
feel
of
the
place
.
We
caught
a
of
the
water
through
the
trees
and
searched
for
an
access
road
that
crossed
the
single
track
railway
line
that
weaved
its
way
around
the
lake
.
Eventually
,
we
found
something
that
looked
promising
and
followed
it
to
a
tiny
parking
area
,
little
more
than
a
field
really
,
where
three
or
four
vehicles
were
already
parked
.
We
left
the
car
and
wandered
down
the
little
lane
in
the
direction
of
the
lake
.
There
was
a
small
building
at
the
end
of
the
lane
,
but
the
office
where
you
were
meant
to
pay
was
unmanned
for
the
season
.
We
learnt
from
the
notice
pinned
to
the
wall
that
the
season
would
not
start
until
the
1st
of
June
.
Apart
from
half
a
dozen
other
visitors
,
early
sun
worshippers
,
and
swimmers
,
the
well
kept
grassed
area
was
empty
.
A
small
stream
flanked
one
side
of
the
'beach'
.
And
a
river
,
providing
access
for
yachts
and
small
boats
,
was
on
the
other
side
.
There
were
a
few
old
benches
,
a
short
jetty
,
a
shower
,
and
scattered
mature
trees
providing
shade
from
the
sun
.
In
every
direction
,
tall
reeds
swayed
in
the
at
the
water's
edge
.
I
was
.
Since
that
first
encounter
,
I
have
returned
to
the
lake
on
countless
occasions
and
in
all
seasons
.
I
have
traveled
by
car
along
the
north
side
,
visiting
the
wineries
that
are
dotted
around
the
slopes
of
Szigliget
,
Badacsony
,
and
Tihany
.
I
have
taken
the
train
to
Budapest
which
hugs
the
south
shore
,
stopping
every
ten
minutes
or
so
at
each
small
station
on
the
way
for
50
miles
or
more
.
I
have
the
Balaton
on
my
bicycle
on
one
epic
June
day
,
which
left
me
with
a
sore
backside
!
I
have
swum
in
the
warm
waters
in
summer
,
when
the
shallow
depth
means
the
temperatures
can
touch
30
degrees
.
In
autumn
,
as
the
days
draw
in
and
mists
drift
across
the
lake
,
I
have
strolled
along
the
shore
amongst
the
fishermen
,
the
regal
swans
watching
the
busy
ducks
,
until
winter
snow
and
ice
freeze
the
water
and
attract
the
skaters
and
the
ice
hockey
players
.
It
is
truly
an
environment
for
all
seasons
.
The
pleasures
of
living
close
to
the
lake
are
many
and
varied
.
Whether
you
prefer
the
lively
summer
adventures
provided
by
the
resort
towns
like
Siofok
or
Zamardi
,
where
thousands
gather
each
weekend
to
party
until
the
early
hours
,
or
the
more
places
scattered
along
the
north
and
west
shores
.
You
will
find
something
to
your
liking
,
I'm
sure
.
Wherever
you
end
up
,
you
won't
be
very
far
from
a
small
informal
restaurant
or
bar
,
and
it
would
be
a
tragedy
if
you
left
the
lake
without
sampling
one
,
or
all
of
the
local
specialities
.
In
the
middle
of
the
day
,
you'll
see
many
people
eating
'langos'
,
a
light
deep
fried
dough
with
garlic
,
sour
cream
,
or
cheese
topping
,
so
filling
and
absolutely
delicious
.
Then
,
in
the
evening
try
'hekk'
,
whole
deep
fried
fish
in
a
spicy
paprika
coating
,
followed
by
two
or
three
'palacsinta'
,
a
thin
crepe
like
pancake
filled
with
jam
,
nutella
,
or
cinnamon
.
Your
diet
can
wait
for
another
day
.
Lake
Balaton
is
one
place
you
will
never
forget
,
just
like
I
never
did
.
