A lazy person's guide to self - improvement

Anxious to be a better person , but too busy to persevere ? You are not alone . Here's the answer . . .

If you are anything like me , then all those New Year's resolutions fell by the wayside as we started to forget the January blues and look forward to the pleasures of summer . Don't get me wrong , I'm all for self - improvement . As Ernest Hemingway put it : " There is nothing in being superior to your fellow man ; true nobility is being superior to your former self . " It's just that there's a lot of scope for improvement and not a lot of time in which to perfect it . So what do you do ?

Well , in recent years a new school of self - improvement has increased in popularity , a version that seems to recognize the fact that most people have full - time jobs . Books with titles such as The ten - minute millionaire , The five - minute healer and my personal favorite , the international bestseller , The miracle morning : the six habits that will transform your life before 8 am . Now this is more like it . I like the whole idea of a quick fix . The miracle morning shows how a morning routine built around six key practices known as 'Life S . A . V . E . R . S " ? that is Silence , , Visualization , Exercise , Reading , and . Can help you get more done and live your best life . I'll give that a go for a start .

I then think to myself , maybe I could afford to also spend a few minutes becoming a more positive person . You may have noticed a rather negative glass half full kind of tone thus far . Anyway , in a bid to develop a happy outlook on life , I leafed through a summary of 15 minutes to happiness by Richard Nicholls . I immediately came across a piece of wisdom that made me happier . Nicholls says that actively seeking happiness can often end up making people feel less happy . In fact , he stresses the value of negative thinking . He even goes so far as to say , " be open to the possibility that you bought this book and you don't actually need it . " I decided that is true and an excellent use of my 15 minutes .

Like many people of advancing years , I am conscious that my waistline is ever expanding and that an effort needs to be made to control the tendency . A diet is out of the question , but a little exercise ? say ten minutes a day ? I'm sure I can manage that . A quick search on Amazon reveals a of alternatives , but I'm attracted to the title The flexible body : move better anywhere , anytime in ten minutes a day by Roger Frampton . I get as far as the instructions on how to construct a chart of exercises before deciding that Mr . Frampton's idea of a simple explanation is not something I can master in ten minutes . So I turn to yoga . Now , yoga is relaxing and it improves flexibility , right ? In her book , The ten minute yoga solution , author Ida Trivedi promises that ten minutes of yoga a day will make me calmer and more physically fit . Just the ticket ! The book doesn't contain a lot of instructions , I like that , it saves time ! So I settle down to try and mimic the illustrated poses , or asanas . I wasn't quite sure what I had expected , but aches and pains weren't on the list . Maybe , I should try the diet after all .

So , after all this research , what is my conclusion ? Well , there are two actually . Number one : I don't believe there is a quick fix for any of my weaknesses , and number two : I was right not to make any New Year's resolutions .
