Public speaking ? Questions : why they are important ?

Have you ever left a meeting or presentation and thought that it had absolutely nothing to do with you so you were not interested at all ? What was the problem ? Perhaps the subject didn't impact you , your life , or your day to day work . Or , it could be that you were not engaged effectively by the person chairing the meeting or giving the presentation .

One of the best ways to engage an audience is through the use of questions . You can use questions to achieve a specific result . Perhaps your may be to get an oral response or to stimulate a mental response . Either way , what you ask and how you ask it have a direct bearing on the success of your presentation . But why bother using questions at all ? Among other things , questions can be a very tool to help your audience to get involved and invested in the subject . And if you are looking for answers , questions provide you with valuable feedback . When you make good use of questions during a meeting or presentation , you encourage your audience to think actively instead of just listening .

If you need feedback on a subject or if you are trying to engage a group in a brainstorming session , asking the right type of questions can be helpful . For example , you could use questions such as : What do you think about this ? How do you feel this will impact ? ? What do you predict the results will be ? ? What is your opinion regarding ? ? You will notice that any answer to these questions requires more than a simple yes or no . The person you are asking is required to share what they think , thus a conversation on any given topic . When using these types of questions though , it is very important to listen attentively to the answers that you get . There is nothing worse than someone asking your opinion about something and then ignoring you when you try to give your answer . Don't your audience by ignoring them . Instead , pay close attention to what they say in response to your questions and this will encourage them to share their thoughts even more freely .

If you are trying to introduce a new thought during a presentation and you want to make sure you have the attention of your audience , use a well worded question . It should be a question that directly impacts your audience . This will make them want to hear what you have to say next .

Perhaps you are involved in a training seminar or have simply been asked to help new employees learn a process . Can questions be helpful in these situations ? Absolutely ! It is not uncommon for new employees to feel overwhelmed when they are being taught new aspects of their job . Often this has to do with the trainer . Since the process or action is something easily done by the trainer , important details might be left out that the trainee would find helpful . So , as the trainer , you can use questions to make sure your new employee understands clearly . For example , you could ask : Why is this action important ? If this procedure is not done properly , what could happen ? How could this your coworkers if it is not done properly ? Their answers to these types of questions will tell you immediately if they truly understand what you are teaching them . But be patient ! Sometimes it takes repeating a certain concept several times before what you are saying can sink in .

Making good use of questions can make you a far more effective presenter because you will hold the attention of your audience . You will be able to understand the opinions and thoughts of those you are speaking to . And , it will make you a much better trainer by identifying if your trainee has understood clearly .
