Unplugging : Is it really that necessary ?

Unplugging . . . I am sure our grandparents never thought this would mean something other than disconnecting an electronic device from the power plug , and never imagined humans would have to disconnect from the devices themselves . As crazy as it sounds , unplugging ? or taking a break from devices ? has become a necessity for many , since it is not that simple .

If we think about it , our smartphones are just marvelous , aren't they ? We can do anything with them , check our email , do our shopping , stay connected with friends through social media , watch movies , listen to music , take photographs , research every single we may have , and so much more ! So what's not to like ? It seems that our smartphones have substituted the need for a face to face conversation , or even the need for a phone call ? just text me instead .

They just make our life easier , don't you think ? If someone arrives late , then we can start bugging them by reaching for our smartphone from our pocket . If you feel you are lost , you can go to a maps app and find your way in a second . If you need to write a report , you just copy and paste any piece of information you need . What would we do without our smartphones ? How did we live our lives before smartphones ?

Strangely enough , it seems that we have forgotten about old , when families could sit at restaurants and chat , when we had to open an in order to do homework , when we could take advantage of a commercial in order to run to the bathroom , or get a snack from the kitchen , and the emotion and suspense of waiting for a week to watch the next episode of our favorite TV show .

I know what you are thinking , " I still talk to my family on WhatsApp . . . Wikipedia knows it all . . . We can pause on Netflix if we need to go . . . I prefer to watch the whole season of my favorite show in one night . . . " All that seems so convenient , so do you think you need to unplug ?

The immediate answer may be : " It is simply impossible . " And I agree with you , it does seem like trying to . But if we really think about it , if we really meditate on it , is it really of any benefit to be plugged all the time ? How many hours do you spend in front of your computer at work every day ? How many times do you check your phone every day ? Do you ever receive messages in the middle of the night because you forget to turn off your phone ? Don't you think we may be by allowing technology to rule our lives ?

If your answer is yes , then think about the benefits of unplugging . First of all , you will get better sleep . Believe me , there is something about the light of your smartphone or laptop that tells your brain to be awake . But if you read a book or meditate instead of checking your Facebook before going to bed , you will have a better night sleep .

Second , you will be able to spend more time with your friends or family . Here is an idea , I have heard that some people those they are eating with if they check their phone at a restaurant , so you could even get a free meal if they cannot resist the temptation . Be careful though , you don't want to be the one paying for all the meals . And don't forget to enjoy the company for once .

Third , more time for yourself . Checking emails or social media accounts can take more time than you can anticipate , you may think , " I forgot to send this email . . . " and , you wasted two hours in front of your computer or using your smartphone , and didn't even notice how it happened . Think of this time as wasted , there is no benefit or in keeping up with every single thing happening around the world . So what would you like to do instead ? Go for a walk ? Do some exercise ? Read a book ? Write your autobiography ? The sky's the limit !

Now , how can you unplug ? It all seems so easy , but it's not . You need to show some self - control here , what is the worst thing that could happen if you don't reply that text immediately ? Will everyone be all right ? Then , it can wait . Organize your email settings so you don't get disturbed when you are on vacation , with your family , or enjoying some . You can go through your apps and eliminate the one or two that are too addictive to be healthy . If I can do it , you can do it . No more 'candy crush' for me . And did you know your smartphone has a 'do not disturb' setting ? It does ! Use it !

And some suggested rules you may want to apply in order to make this unplugging thing more real to you :
? No phones in bed .
? No phones at the table .
? No emails on vacation .
? No phones in view ? put it in a drawer .

Happy unplugging day ! Or weekend ?
