In January 1912 , after a long and difficult expedition in the cold , Scott and his team successfully reached their destination . However , when they got there , they found they weren't the first ! A Norwegian team , led by Roald Amundsen , had already arrived 34 days earlier . On the return journey , Scott's team faced a struggle for as they suffered in the intense cold . Sadly , Scott and his four companion all died before they reached home .
