This sport was invented by Dr . Naismith , a gym teacher who was looking to create a new indoor game for his students to enjoy during the winter at the YMCA in Springfield , ( United States ) . However , it wasn't until that the sport was called basketball . Today are 213 and affiliated with the International Federation ( FIBA ) , which is estimated to involve million players worldwide .

Basketball first appeared at the St . Louis Olympics as an exhibition sport , and it was not part of the Olympic program until Berlin 1936 , when the men's category was included . For its part , the female made her Olympic debut almost years later , in 1976 . players have been allowed to participate in the Games since Barcelona 1992 , when the United States Dream Team won gold . Since then , NBA players have continued to appear in their respective teams , attracting the attention of fans , who are hoping witness their outstanding skills the Games .

At the 2020 Games there will be teams , both male and female . These will be separated into two groups in a preliminary round before the top eight advance to the quarterfinals .
