Christopher Columbus sets sail west and arrives in the Bahamas, believing he is in India. He tells stories of riches in the Americas. Europeans expand territory in the Americas and begin to use slave labor for growing crops, especially tobacco. Civilizations with larger populations began to develop- especially around water sources due to the introduction of agriculture. Europeans arrive in the Americas, introduced to new crops such as maize (corn) and tobacco. Europeans see potential wealth in growing these “new” crops. European nations want more of a variety of goods and a shorter route to Asia. They think they can sail west to Asia, instead of sailing down and around Africa. Early humans were nomadic (moved from place to place in search of food). Development of agriculture called for humans to stay in place so they can cultivate crops. Continental Drift. Governments and forms of society began to develop (nations are also created). Pangea, a supercontinent in which all seven continents were close together existed. Nations trade goods such as textiles and spices, creating similar cultures.
