There are many reasons , as in any process , but the most important have to do with the lack of an appropriate policy ; much of the profits form foreign investment went to the countries of origin of the large that settled in Mexico . In addition there was the absence of adequate technological development wich increased dependence on other countries . At the end of the day , the major factor was the application of a protectionist that did not produce the expected results .
To this must be added the persistence of and social inequality and neglect of the sector . This was due to industrialization and the avaibility of better services and jobs in cities wich attracted large numbers of peasants , who migrated to cities in search of better of living . These imbalances , coupled with external processes such as high global interest rates and the fall in prices at the end of the 1970s contributed to the crisis .
A country that bets on the growth of its industry , without at the same time implementing processes of scientific research and technological ( know as technological lag ) , will be doomed to depend on the scientific and technological advances of other countries . This usually takes a long time in less economically countries such as ours , and it is also very costly so very few nations manage to obtain acces to it .
During the years that the substitution of imports model was in force ( it was never achieved completely ) , the technological development the country was due to the importation of modern and equipment , modern consumer goods such as cars , refrigerators , televisions , and the development of the companies that settled here . National processes of scientific and technological innovation were the exception , despite the creation of institutes and research centers , most of them incorporated into public .
