Abd al-Rahman I, the only survivor of the Umayyad family, came to Al Andalus and founded an independent Emirate. Muhammad died. By the time of his death most Arabs had converted to Islam in the Arabian Peninsula. Muslim armies crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and defeated the Visigoths.
