READING COMPREHENSION: FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE Florence Nightingale was born in Italy in 1820, but as a child she lived in England. In 1849 she traveled in Europe and she started training as a nurse. She studied in Germany. When the “Crimean War” began, she organized medical care in Turkey. She helped to start two new hospitals there from 1854 to 1860. Every night she visited her patients and they called her “the Lady with the Lamp”. When she returned to England, she started her own school for nurses. This new school was the first school to give professional education for nurses. Florence received many honors for her work. She died in London in 1910. In 1915 the government put up a monument in her honor in London. READ AND ANSWER: Where was Florence Nightingale born?
