Feedback

Most people lived in the countryside during this time, but cities were where the biggest changes and ideas of the Renaissance happened.

Guilds were groups of craftsmen and traders who worked together to control the quality and prices of the goods they made and sold.

Merchants started lending money and charging extra money (called interest) to make a profit (money they can keep after expenses), which was the start of modern banking.

Renaissance architects looked at the balance, beauty, and proportions of ancient Roman buildings and used those ideas to create new structures.

Rich cities wanted to show off how wealthy and powerful they were by building large, impressive buildings like cathedrals and palaces.

The Medici family made a fortune in banking and used their wealth to fill Florence with art and beautiful buildings, making it the “birthplace of the Renaissance.”

Florence is called the birthplace of the Renaissance because the Medici family funded amazing works of art and architecture that inspired the Renaissance movement.

Bankers and tax-gatherers were often disliked because they took money from others and were seen as greedy, so artists painted them in an ugly or exaggerated way to make fun of them.
