In january 1607 , three small ships ( leave ) England for America . Four months later , they ( arrive ) in America . Several of the men ( negative / survive ) the long , stormy journey . the men ( choose ) an area on the James River that is now in the state of Virginia . They ( begin ) to built a fort . The men ( be ) " gentlemen " and ( negative / work ) with their hands . Their purpose in America ( be ) to hunt for gold and to start a small colony for England . Unfortunately , there ( negative / be ) not any gold . Winter ( come ) and there ( negative be ) not enough food for the colonists . Many men ( get ) sick . By the end of the first winter , only 40 men ( be ) still alive . The first few years of the colony ( be ) very difficult . Disease , starvation , and Native Americans ( kill ) most of the settlers . Eventually , the colonists ( learn ) more about farming and the weather . They ( make ) peace with the Native Americans . tobacco ( be ) the business of the new colony . Gradually more and more settlers ( arrive ) , and many small towns ( grow ) along the river .
