You think that your memories are accurate , but this isn't always correct . If someone tells you that you saw something happen , you think it's true . There's a good chance you'll believe it because we can't tell the difference between our real memory and a memory that has been " planted " in our brains . In one experiment , people were shown pictures of a man putting a stolen purse in his jacket pocket . Later , they were told that the purse was in his trouser pocket . Many of the people remember the picture correctly and were positive that the purse was in his trouser pocket . It seems that what we hear and read change our memories . This means that judges always believe what people say in court . For one thing , someone blame the wrong person for a crime . What's more , an innocent person confess a crime because someone convinced them that they actually did it !
