It has been calculated that 24 , 000 million tons of arable soil are lost worldwide every year . The loss of this soil causes desertification , a process of land in arid and semi - arid areas produced by climatic variations or by activities . It usually begins with soil degradation , or deterioration of its and fertility , which reduces and culminates in soil erosion . It is due to different causes , including change and abusive land use .
Climate change is causing to rise , which means that annual tends to be between 200 and 600 mm and with a strong character .
Abusive or inappropriate land use causes with activities such as :
- or abusive cutting down of forests to use their wood or to replace them with agricultural crops .
- The overexploitation of crops or intensive , which impoverishes the soil and degrades it .
- Overgrazing or excessive consumption of pasture by livestock , which leaves the soil .
