Feedback

The unemployment rate does not fully count everyone who is dissatisfied with the job market. Discouraged workers would often like to work, but they have given up looking for a job because they believe that none exist. Since they are not looking for a job, they are not counted as unemployed. The underemployed would like to have longer hours or a better job. Since they have a job, they are not counted as unemployed.

In order to be considered unemployed, a person must be actively looking for a job and not working. Adam is an example of a discouraged worker. He has given up looking for a job, so he is not counted as unemployed. Milton is an example of an underemployed worker. Even though he would like to work more, he is counted as employed because he has a job. John is both jobless and looking for a job, so he counts as unemployed.

Unemployment rate = (unemployed/labor force)

Unemployed = Labor force - employed; Unemployment rate = (unemployed/labor force)

Employed = Full time workers + part time workers; Unemployed = Labor force - employed; Unemployment rate = (unemployed/labor force)

Labor force participation rate = (labor force/population age 16 and older)

Labor force = employed + unemployed; Labor force participation rate = (Labor force/population age 16 and older)

Employed = full time workers + part time workers; Labor force = employed + unemployed; Labor force participation rate = (labor force/population age 16 and older)

Employed = full time workers + part time workers; Labor force = employed + unemployed

Unemployed = Labor force - employed
