Fillers: those blessed "bad" habits

Meaning: Fillers are words, sounds and expressions that allow you to take a second to think about what you are going to say next.

When you need to take a time to decide what to say you use a filler.

Example:

  • umm... errr... (sounds)
  • like, well, actually (words)
  • You know, you see (expressions)
2

Some examples

•At the beginning of the sentence or in the middle
  1. Well, it's ok, you can borrow my car
  2. I wanted to say... well, I don't know where to start.
3

Examples

Like: very frequent. It isn't the verb like or the preposition like. Here "like" is just a pause.

Example: This guy was like, completely crazy (Like= a pause)

I was, like, very scared

Other fillers

  • Actually: Actually cats are cute
  • You see: I was going to do it but you see I couldn't do it
  • You know: I felt, you know, very stressed
I can't say it in English, you know
  • I mean: I mean, this is really difficult to do

I felt was going to say, I mean, to tell him something

  • You know what I mean: I was nervous, you know what I mean?
  • Or something like that: She told me that she wasn’t sure or something like that
  • I guess: I was going to eat dinner at home, but I guess I can go eat at a restaurant instead.
  • Kind of/kinda: This thing is kinda good.

Check it out!

Yeah, that's true you can mix them

  • Example:
  • This thing is kinda... you know... well, really exciting
  • I was going to tell him... basically, you know... that I love him
  • I was like, actually, surprised you know what I mean?
