Hyde Park

Hyde Park is probably the UK's most famous urban park. It covers 350 acres (142 hectares) in western central London, near the affluent neighbourhoods of Mayfair and Knightsbridge. It was created in 1536 by King Henry VIII as a place to go hunting, and was opened to the general public in 1637. Read on to find out about some of the things you can see and do there.

The Serpentine

The Serpentine is a beautiful 40-acre lake in the middle of the Hyde Park. It got its name because it is shaped like a snake. If you want to explore it, you can rent a small boat or pedalo, and in the summer, there is an area where you can swim.

Animals in War Monument

This monument is one of many in and around the park. Created in 2004, it commemorates all the animals that have died or suffered in different wars as part of the British armed forces, such as dogs used to rescue bomb victims, pigeons used to carry messages and even glow worms used to help soldiers read maps in the dark.

4

Speakers' Corner

Speakers' Corner is an area in the northeast corner of Hyde Park where public debates and speeches about many different topics take place every Sunday. People are free to say whatever they want (as long as they don't use profanity or say anything illegal). Some famous people who have spoken here include Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and George Orwell.

Festivals and Events

Hyde Park's calendar is full of fun things to do all year round. In December and January, the park transforms into "Winter Wonderland"; there is a Christmas market, a funfair, an ice rink, ice sculptures and a circus. In the summer, there are music, comedy and cinema events, as well as food and drink festivals.
