The temperature of the earth increases towards its centre. We can use this heat as hot water to heat buildings or to generate electricity. 2 It is a thick black liquid drawn from the deep layers of the Earth. Solar panels, called photovoltaic cells, are used to turn the sun’s energy into electricity. The sun can also be used to heat water, for example for use in homes, buildings or swimming pools. 6 The source of this energy sourcce is water, so power plants are usually located on or near a water source, for example a river or lake. 7 It is produced from material that comes from plants and animals. For example wood, food waste or animal droppings can be burned to generate electricity in power plants.
