The river is commonly called the "River of Five Colors" or the "Liquid Rainbow," and is noted for its striking colors. It is in an incredible engineering feat. Initially built by miners of the salt mines as a sanctuary before work, it was later extended, with a capacity of around 8,000. After structural concerns, a new cathedral was built and opened in 1995. It’s an incredible sight, an underground labyrinth, illuminated by colourful lights. The largest paramo – Andean highland moor – in the world. Numerous endemic species including up to 12 m high Espeletia plants.
