Clashed with Truman over war policy and was removed from his command and created an armed force for the Philippines - after Japan attacked his force had to flee - he returned to liberate the Philippines in Oct 1944 at Leyte.

After Japan's surrender he shot himself in a suicide attempt. He was nursed back to health then tried for war crimes. He was found guilty and was executed via hanging.
